Earn a Master’s Degree in Education:
The next stage on the path to a doctorate in education is earning a master’s degree. At this stage, it is recommended that the student obtain a master’s degree in an educational subject. Selection committees for a competitive doctorate in education programs look very closely at the graduate work a student has completed when deciding whether they will be a good fit for their program.
Decide if a PhD or EdD is right for you:
After obtaining a master’s degree, a student should decide which type of doctoral program is right for him. Drexel offers PhD and EdD programs in education. Take the GRE:
A GRE score may or may not be required for admission to a doctoral program. At Drexel, GRE scores are required for admission to the PhD in Education program, but not required for the EdD in Educational Leadership and Management program.
Apply for doctoral programs:
After a student has decided what type of doctoral program to pursue, they should begin researching doctoral programs that match their interests. Drexel’s EdD program offers several concentration areas that allow students to focus their studies on a specific area of interest.
When a student enters a doctoral program, they are often paired with a supervising professor with experience in the subject in which they are interested. At the application stage, students should research the faculty to identify a possible supervising professor.
In addition to identifying the program, students should check the admission requirements very carefully and gather all the necessary documents. This often includes a resume, letters of recommendation, and essays. Complete work in a doctoral degree program:
Once accepted into a doctoral program, a student completes coursework and develops and submits a dissertation proposal. At Drexel, a student completes a total of 74 credits to earn a PhD in Education, or 60-61.5 credits for an EdD degree.
Complete and defend your dissertation:
After completing the research and educational foundation courses, the student will write and defend his dissertation. A student typically spends their final year in the program researching a problem they have identified in the field of education. The student records his findings in his dissertation and submits it to the assigned dissertation committee. Along the way, the student will have regular contact with their supervising professor to ensure they are on track with their research and preparing their dissertation correctly. Once a student has successfully defended their dissertation research, they have officially completed the program. They will attend commencement where they will receive their doctorate from their teaching professor.
