9 Incredibly Cute High Heel Outfits That Will Be In Your Rotation

The change of season doesn’t necessarily translate into an overhaul of your wardrobe. Many autumn perennials also serve as winter essentials, for example. This comes in handy when you’re mourning the end of cool breezes and colorful leaves – and therefore dreading the biting cold and shorter days. Here’s the silver lining: you can still enjoy some of your favorite pieces amid the colder forecast, like sweater dresses and jackets, scarves, and, my personal favorite, knee-high boots.

Knee-high boots fall into the same category as printed jeans and all things Ugg – they’re pieces of clothing that can take functional winter clothing and make it fashionable. They serve a purpose – the more material on the leg, the warmer the leg will be in cold weather – but they’re also stylish, so you don’t have to sacrifice good looks to survive sub-freezing temperatures.

Dressing in knee-high boots is often simple: styled with denim, usually skinny jeans, and worn with an oversized sweater. That’s all well and good (and, admittedly, a staple in this writer’s closet), but there are plenty of other high-boot outfits that just beg to be worn. Ahead, I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite pairs to inspire your everyday uniform for the colder months.

With Romper

Here at InStyle, we worship the all-in-one outfit, where the only area you really have to put effort into is your accessories. Raincoats are a perfect example of this: simply slip into your favorite and you’re practically out the door. Trainers work well with these pieces if you want to keep things casual in the heat, but if you’d like to upgrade your ensemble and make it work for cooler days, opt for over-the-knee boots (and even a pair of tights) for added height and contrast.

To add coverage to a miniskirt

Mini skirts are too cute to pack away all winter, but while they pair well with tucked-in oversized sweaters, this sweet aesthetic won’t keep you warm. Layering is key – think thick tights and leg warmers – but in addition to hosiery and socks, knee-high boots also work as a shield against the cold.

With leggings

Boots and leggings attract like magnets and the look can be dressed up, down or sporty. The combination also makes for the perfect fit if you’re trying to channel late 80s or early 90s fashion with a matching quarter zip, puffy jacket and headband.

With a sweater dress

Basic? Maybe. Classical? Absolutely, so don’t sleep on this cozy and cute combination. It’s an easy-to-put-together look that you can wear to brunch with the girls, a date with that special someone, the office, or running errands.

Put on a shirt dress

Depending on the shirt (i.e. button-up, oversized sweater, or graphic tee), the shirt dress itself can give off a casual vibe. Adding a knee high boot could change the whole aesthetic. A chunky or chunky heel will make you feel a little prettier (not to mention give you a little lift), while something like a cowboy-style boot will add a touch of flair.

For a contrast to the cozy cardigan

If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that being cozy should come first, no matter what occasion you’re dressing for. Comfort is undoubtedly the key to feeling your best, but you don’t have to sacrifice style in the process. Trick? Pair a cozy basic with something a little dressier, like a knit cardigan and chic knee-high boots.

As an extra layer under long skirts

Layering is essential for survival in harsh winter weather conditions (freezing temperatures). So while you can pair knee high boots with mini skirts to give your footwear the maximum exposure it deserves, using them as an extra layer of warmth under a midi or maxi skirt or dress is actually a pretty genius move.

Shade the lamp for a moment

I know Ariana Grande didn’t invent the shade, but she definitely brought the trend back. Mastering the art of shading is simple: Pair an oversized sweater or sweatshirt with over-the-knee or over-the-knee boots with confidence. You’ll definitely want to add a long coat and tights if the temperatures start to drop below your neck.

Let it be sporty

If you think of over-the-knee boots and you think of elegant ensembles, you’re not alone. This type of shoe is more formal, but also has a sporty side. Team your faves with workout leggings and a hoodie, layer with an oversized ruched cardigan and complete the look with a beanie. The finished product is polished but super loose, so you can look and feel cool, calm and collected while you check things off your to-do list.
